New BMW Middleweight Adventure Motorcycle Spied Testing

BMW Motorrad is working on a new middleweight adventure motorcycle, and an early prototype has now been spotted testing overseas. The new bike is expected to fill the gap between the BMW F 450 GS and F 900 GS in the company's adventure lineup.

The motorcycle is still in an early stage of development, so BMW has not revealed its name or official specifications. However, reports suggest that the company could bring back the F 650 GS name for this new model.

The test bike appears to have a proper off-road-focused setup. It gets a 21-inch front wheel and 17-inch rear wheel, both using tubeless spoke wheels. The prototype also features an inverted front fork, a monoshock at the rear and dual-purpose tyres.

The overall design looks more serious and adventure-focused than the smaller F 450 GS. The motorcycle also appears to use a new frame rather than simply sharing the platform of BMW's existing adventure models.

Expected Engine and Performance

BMW has not confirmed the engine details yet. Current reports suggest the motorcycle could use a new parallel-twin engine with around 650cc of displacement.

Power is expected to be somewhere around 70–80 PS, which would put the bike directly into competition with motorcycles such as the Yamaha Ténéré 700, Honda XL750 Transalp and Suzuki V-Strom 800 DE. These figures are estimates, not official BMW specifications.

Why BMW Needs This Motorcycle

BMW currently has a noticeable gap between its F 450 GS and F 900 GS. A new middleweight GS could give the company a stronger option for riders who want more performance and off-road ability than the F 450 GS but don't want to move up to the larger F 900 GS.

The segment is already becoming highly competitive, especially with motorcycles such as the Yamaha Ténéré 700 and Honda XL750 Transalp. A lighter and more off-road-focused BMW could make the GS range more attractive to adventure riders.

Expected Launch

The motorcycle seen in the spy images appears to be an early prototype, meaning production is still some time away. Current reports suggest that a production version could arrive around 2028, although BMW has not announced an official launch date.

For now, BMW has not confirmed the name, engine size, price or launch timeline. More details are expected as development of the new adventure motorcycle progresses.
