Ducati has revealed an interesting glimpse into its future electric motorcycle technology. A newly highlighted patent describes an electric motorcycle powertrain featuring a high-revving motor that could spin at 18,500 rpm, with the patent specifying a broader operating range of 17,000 to 20,000 rpm.

Ducati Working on a High-RPM Electric Motor

Unlike many electric motorcycles that rely on relatively simple direct-drive systems, Ducati's patented design uses a reduction gearbox and chain final drive. The high motor speed is reduced through the gearing, while torque is increased before power reaches the rear wheel.

One of the most interesting parts of the design is Ducati's approach to keeping the powertrain compact and narrow. The patent describes moving the motor's rotor-position sensor to a downstream gearbox shaft rather than mounting it directly on the motor shaft. This could help reduce the overall width of the drivetrain.

Inspired by Ducati's MotoE Experience

Ducati already has significant experience with electric motorcycle technology through its V21L MotoE prototype, which was developed specifically for electric racing. The V21L produces up to 110 kW (150 hp) and 140 Nm of torque.

The new patent suggests that Ducati is continuing to explore ways of making an electric motorcycle feel more like a performance machine rather than simply an EV with instant acceleration.

Is Ducati Launching an Electric Motorcycle?

Not yet. The patent does not confirm a production model, launch date, power output, battery capacity or range. It only shows that Ducati is developing technical solutions that could potentially be used in a future electric motorcycle.

If Ducati eventually puts this technology into a road-going motorcycle, the combination of a high-revving electric motor, reduction gearbox and lightweight packaging could make its future EVs very different from today's electric motorcycles.
