Most motorcycles follow a familiar formula: two wheels, a conventional engine, a frame, handlebars and a seat. But motorcycle history has also produced machines that completely ignored that formula.
Some manufacturers experimented with unusual engines, while others changed the way motorcycles steer, lean or even use their wheels. A few were created to solve real engineering problems, while others were built simply to explore how far motorcycle design could go.
Here are eight motorcycles that looked seriously unusual — but behind their strange appearance, there was often a very interesting idea.
8. Yamaha Tesseract
The Yamaha Tesseract looked like something from a futuristic movie rather than a normal motorcycle. Its four-wheel layout was the first thing that caught attention, but the real idea was to combine motorcycle-like leaning with the extra stability of four wheels.
Engine: Hybrid powertrain combining an internal-combustion engine with electric motors.
Wheel Setup: Four wheels, with two at the front and two at the rear.
Unique Feature: A special tilting mechanism allowed the machine to lean while cornering instead of behaving like a conventional four-wheeler.
Why It Was Built: Yamaha wanted to explore a machine that could offer more stability without completely losing the dynamic feeling of a motorcycle.
What Made It Weird: A four-wheel motorcycle that could lean into corners was a very unusual combination.
The Tesseract remained a concept rather than becoming a regular production motorcycle, but it demonstrated how dramatically the traditional motorcycle layout could be changed.
7. Bimota Tesi
The Bimota Tesi may look like a sport bike at first, but its front end reveals what makes it special. Instead of using the familiar telescopic forks found on most motorcycles, the Tesi uses a completely different steering and suspension arrangement.
Engine: Different Tesi generations used different high-performance motorcycle engines, depending on the model.
Steering: Hub-center steering instead of conventional telescopic forks.
Suspension: Separate front suspension and steering mechanisms connected through linkages.
Why It Was Built: The design aimed to control braking forces and suspension movement more independently, potentially giving the bike more predictable handling.
What Made It Weird: The front wheel is connected to a complex system of links and hubs rather than simply sitting between two traditional forks.
The Tesi proved that motorcycle designers could completely rethink the front end without abandoning the basic sport-bike concept.
6. Suzuki RE5
The Suzuki RE5 is unusual because its strangest feature cannot be fully understood just by looking at it. Underneath its classic styling was an engine that worked very differently from the piston engines normally used in motorcycles.
Engine: Single-rotor Wankel rotary engine.
Engine Design: Instead of pistons moving up and down inside cylinders, the engine used a rotating triangular rotor.
Why It Was Built: Suzuki believed the smooth power delivery and compact nature of rotary-engine technology could offer an interesting alternative to conventional motorcycle engines.
Main Challenge: Heat management, fuel consumption and the complexity of the technology made the concept difficult to establish in the motorcycle market.
What Made It Weird: It was a real production motorcycle powered by a rotary engine at a time when almost every other motorcycle relied on conventional pistons.
The RE5 did notutio start a rotary-motorcycle revoln, but it remains one of the most memorable examples of manufacturers trying something completely different.
5. Honda Rune
The Honda Rune was not weird because of some experimental engine or complicated steering system. Its unusual character came from the sheer scale and styling of the motorcycle.
It looked more like a custom-built show machine than a conventional production cruiser, with an extremely long body, huge rear tire and dramatic front end.
Engine: 1,832cc liquid-cooled flat-six.
Engine Origin: The engine was based on Honda's Gold Wing powertrain.
Design: Extremely long wheelbase, wide rear tire and large, flowing bodywork.
Why It Was Built: Honda wanted to create an exclusive luxury cruiser that would stand apart from ordinary motorcycles.
What Made It Weird: Its proportions were enormous for a motorcycle, giving it an unmistakable presence on the road.
The Rune was never intended to be an ordinary commuter. It was more of a statement about how far Honda could take the luxury-cruiser concept.
4. Dodge Tomahawk
The Dodge Tomahawk is one of the most extreme machines ever presented as a motorcycle. Its enormous engine came from the world of performance cars, while its four-wheel layout made it look unlike almost anything else with handlebars.
Engine: 8.3-liter V10 derived from the Dodge Viper.
Wheel Setup: Four wheels arranged as two closely spaced pairs.
Power Concept: A massive car-derived engine placed inside a motorcycle-style machine.
Why It Was Built: The Tomahawk was created as an extreme engineering and design statement rather than a practical mass-market motorcycle.
What Made It Weird: Combining a motorcycle-style riding position with a huge V10 engine and four wheels pushed the motorcycle concept to an extraordinary level.
The Tomahawk became famous largely because of its outrageous design and enormous engine. It was never meant to become a normal everyday motorcycle.
3. Ecosse ES1
The Ecosse ES1 was built around a completely different philosophy: reduce weight and rethink the traditional motorcycle structure. Its carbon-fiber construction and unconventional chassis made it look more like an advanced engineering project than a conventional superbike.
Construction: Extensive use of lightweight carbon fiber.
Design Focus: Minimal weight and highly integrated chassis construction.
Chassis: The designers moved away from the traditional motorcycle frame concept and integrated major components into a more compact structure.
Why It Was Built: The goal was to create an exceptionally lightweight, high-performance motorcycle using advanced materials and engineering.
What Made It Weird: Almost every major part of the motorcycle was designed with weight reduction and structural efficiency in mind.
The ES1 showed that unusual motorcycle design does not always mean adding more technology. Sometimes it means removing traditional components and rebuilding the machine around a completely different idea.
2. Yamaha Niken
The Yamaha Niken immediately stands out because of its two front wheels. But unlike a conventional three-wheeled vehicle, it was designed to lean through corners like a motorcycle.
Engine: 847cc liquid-cooled three-cylinder engine in the original Niken.
Wheel Setup: Two front wheels and one rear wheel.
Unique Feature: Yamaha's Leaning Multi-Wheeler system allows the front wheels to move and lean with the motorcycle.
Why It Was Built: The additional front wheel provides a larger contact area and aims to increase front-end stability and confidence, particularly on uneven roads and during cornering.
What Made It Weird: It looks like a three-wheeler, but the rider operates it much more like a leaning motorcycle.
The Niken demonstrated that adding another wheel does not necessarily mean turning a motorcycle into a conventional four-wheeled vehicle.
1. Lazareth LM 847
The Lazareth LM 847 looks less like a normal motorcycle and more like an engineering experiment that somehow escaped onto the road. Its four-wheel layout is unusual enough, but the massive V8 engine makes it even more extreme.
Engine: 4.7-liter Maserati-derived V8.
Wheel Setup: Four wheels arranged in pairs at the front and rear.
Power: Around 470 horsepower.
Riding Position: Motorcycle-style riding position despite the four-wheel configuration.
Why It Was Built: Lazareth wanted to create an extreme machine that combined motorcycle-style riding with the power of a high-performance car.
What Made It Weird: A V8 engine, four wheels and a motorcycle-style seat are rarely found together in one machine.
The LM 847 was never designed to become an ordinary motorcycle for daily commuting. Its purpose was to demonstrate what could happen when conventional motorcycle engineering rules were pushed almost completely aside.
Why These Motorcycles Were So Different
The strangest motorcycles are often interesting for more than their appearance. Behind many of these machines was an attempt to solve a problem, improve performance or simply challenge the traditional idea of what a motorcycle should be.
The Yamaha Tesseract experimented with four-wheel stability, the Suzuki RE5 explored rotary-engine technology, the Bimota Tesi rethought motorcycle steering, and the Yamaha Niken showed that a motorcycle could lean with two front wheels.
Not every experiment became a commercial success, but that does not make it meaningless. These unusual machines pushed manufacturers and engineers to explore ideas that would have been impossible if everyone had followed the same motorcycle formula.
And sometimes, the most memorable motorcycles are not the ones that follow the rules — they are the ones that completely ignore them.
